Follow the Great Migration.

One of nature's greatest wildlife journeys unfolds across Tanzania throughout the year. Discover where the herds may be, what each season offers and when to plan your Serengeti migration safari.

Thousands of Wildebeest. One Extraordinary Journey.

Great Migration Safari

The Serengeti Never Tells the Same Story Twice.

The wildebeest migration is a continuous natural movement shaped by rainfall, fresh grazing and instinct. Different months can bring calving herds in the south, vast columns crossing the central plains or dramatic river activity in northern Serengeti.

Year-Round Migration Movement
Jul–Oct Northern Serengeti
Jan–Mar Southern Plains
Explore Migration Safari

Where Could the Herds Be?

Migration timing is approximate and changes with rainfall and grazing conditions. Wildlife movements can never be guaranteed.

January – March

Southern Serengeti & Ndutu

Green plains, large concentrations of wildebeest and the famous calving period create outstanding predator and newborn wildlife viewing.

April – June

Moving North

Herds gradually travel through central and western Serengeti as seasonal rains influence fresh grazing and migration routes.

November – December

Returning South

Short rains encourage the herds to begin moving back toward the fertile plains of eastern and southern Serengeti.

Planning specifically for the Mara River?

Northern Serengeti accommodation and vehicle access can be limited during peak migration months, so planning well in advance gives you better options.

When Should You Come?

Choose Your Travel Month Around the Experience You Want.

Every Part of the Year Tells a Different Tanzania Story.

Wildlife movements, rainfall, landscapes and travel conditions shift throughout the year. Instead of asking only for the “best month,” start by deciding what you most want to experience.

January – March

Green Landscapes & Calving Season

Southern Serengeti and Ndutu can be particularly interesting as migration herds gather on the short-grass plains.

April – May

Tanzania's Greener Side

Seasonal rainfall transforms landscapes and can create a quieter atmosphere across many safari destinations.

June – October

Classic Dry-Season Safari

Dry conditions make this one of Tanzania's most popular safari periods, with northern Serengeti becoming especially important later in the season.

November – December

Fresh Landscapes & Returning Herds

Short rains can bring greener scenery while migration movement gradually begins turning toward the southern Serengeti.

Tanzania Travel FAQ

Questions Before You Travel? Start Here.

From safari timing and trip duration to Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar and the Great Migration, these are some of the questions travellers often ask while planning Tanzania.

01 When is the best time to visit Tanzania? +

Tanzania can be visited throughout the year. The best month depends on what you want to experience. Dry-season months are popular for classic wildlife viewing, while other periods can offer greener landscapes, migration activity or different travel conditions. Explore Tanzania safaris →

02 How many days should I allow for a Tanzania safari? +

For the northern circuit, around five to eight safari days gives travellers much more flexibility to combine Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti without rushing. Shorter safaris are possible, while longer journeys allow a slower pace and additional destinations.

03 Can I see the Big Five in Tanzania? +

Tanzania offers opportunities to see lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino, particularly across destinations such as Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Wildlife sightings remain natural and can never be guaranteed.

04 When can I see the Great Migration? +

The Great Migration is a year-round movement through the Serengeti ecosystem. Different months can bring calving in the southern plains, movement through central Serengeti or herds in the northern Serengeti near the Mara River. Explore the migration safari →

05 Can I combine a safari with Zanzibar? +

Yes. Safari and Zanzibar work particularly well together. Many travellers explore northern Tanzania first and then fly to Zanzibar for several days of beach time, Stone Town and island experiences. Explore Zanzibar →

06 Which Kilimanjaro route should I choose? +

Route choice depends on your available trekking days, preferred scenery, mountain experience and acclimatization profile. Lemosho, Machame, Marangu and the Northern Circuit each offer a different climbing experience. Compare Kilimanjaro climbs →

07 Is a private safari better for first-time visitors? +

A private safari gives you greater flexibility with the daily pace, stops and how long you spend at wildlife sightings. It can be especially useful for couples, families, photographers and travellers who prefer a more personalized itinerary.

08 How far in advance should I plan my safari? +

Earlier planning gives you more choice, particularly for peak safari periods, northern Serengeti migration season and popular accommodation. If your dates are already fixed, it is worth starting the planning process as soon as possible.

Before Your Tanzania Trip
Practical Travel Advice

Pack Less Stress. Bring More Curiosity.

Your Tanzania adventure begins before the flight. Good preparation leaves more room to enjoy the journey once you arrive.

Eight Things to Think About Before You Travel.

Requirements and personal needs vary, so always check current official guidance before departure. These are the practical areas most travellers should think through.

Documents

Passport & Entry Requirements

Check passport validity, current Tanzania entry requirements and any documents relevant to your nationality before departure.

Insurance

Travel Insurance

Choose suitable cover for your itinerary, activities, medical needs and any adventure elements included in your journey.

Safari Packing

Keep Your Luggage Practical

Comfortable neutral clothing, sun protection, useful layers and sensible luggage make safari travel easier.

Photography

Camera, Batteries & Storage

Bring enough memory, charging options and spare batteries so an unforgettable wildlife sighting does not become a missed photograph.

Money

Cards & Spending Money

Consider how you will handle personal purchases, tips and expenses that may not be included in your itinerary.

Connectivity

Phone & Internet

Connectivity varies as you move between towns, national parks, mountain areas and remote safari regions.

Kilimanjaro

Mountain Gear Is Different

Kilimanjaro requires additional clothing, footwear, sleeping equipment and preparation beyond normal safari packing.

Zanzibar

Pack With Island Culture in Mind

Beachwear is ideal at resorts and beaches, while respectful clothing is appropriate when exploring Stone Town and local communities.

!
Travel requirements can change.

Always confirm current passport, visa, health, insurance and entry requirements with the relevant official authorities before travelling.

Wildlife Encounters Worth Travelling For.

Tanzania's wildlife is never a checklist alone. The most memorable safari moments often come from watching natural behaviour unfold slowly — a pride resting beside the road, elephants travelling together or thousands of animals moving across the Serengeti.

Wildlife in the Wild

Sometimes the Safari Comes Straight to You.

Wildlife experiences cannot be staged or guaranteed. That uncertainty is exactly what makes safari special. A quiet game drive can suddenly become the moment you remember most from Tanzania.

Responsible Tanzania Travel

Travel With Curiosity. Leave With Respect.

The best Tanzania journeys are about more than collecting photographs. They are about understanding the places you visit, respecting wildlife, valuing local knowledge and travelling thoughtfully.

Beyond the Safari Vehicle

Tanzania Is a Place to Experience, Not Simply Pass Through.

Travel Thoughtfully

Make the Journey Meaningful Beyond the Wildlife.

A safari introduces you to extraordinary landscapes and wildlife, but Tanzania's identity also comes from its people, communities, traditions and relationship with the natural world. Travel with openness, patience and respect for the places that welcome you.

01
Wildlife Respect Natural Behaviour

Give wildlife space and allow sightings to unfold without forcing an interaction.

02
Community Value Local Knowledge

Listen, ask questions and allow local perspectives to become part of the journey.

03
Culture Ask Before Photographing

Respect people's privacy and seek permission before taking close personal photographs.

04
Environment Leave Places as You Find Them

Small choices help protect the landscapes everyone has travelled so far to experience.

Four Simple Ways to Travel Better

Responsible travel does not need to be complicated. Respect for wildlife, people and place should simply become part of how the journey is experienced.

01
Slow Down

Spend More Time in Fewer Places

A balanced itinerary creates more time to experience destinations instead of continually moving between them.

02
Listen

Learn From Your Local Guide

Guides add context to wildlife, landscapes, communities and the small details that bring Tanzania to life.

03
Respect

Treat Culture as More Than a Photo

Approach cultural experiences as opportunities for genuine exchange rather than simply another stop on an itinerary.

04
Protect

Keep Tanzania Wild

Follow park guidance, avoid litter and respect the habitats that support Tanzania's wildlife.

Come for the wildlife. Leave understanding more of Tanzania. Go Vision Safaris combines wildlife experiences, local knowledge and carefully planned journeys across Tanzania.
