WHY THE NORTHERN CIRCUIT?

Discover Kilimanjaro Beyond the Crowds

The Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route is made for climbers who want more than simply reaching the summit. It offers a longer, beautifully varied journey around the mountain, combining quieter trails, dramatic scenery and a carefully paced approach to altitude.

Beginning from Kilimanjaro's western side, the route gradually travels across the Shira Plateau before continuing around the remote northern slopes. Here, the mountain feels wider, wilder and considerably less travelled than many of the traditional climbing corridors.

The extended itinerary gives your body additional time to acclimatize while allowing you to experience several distinct ecological zones before the final ascent to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

01

Quieter Mountain Trails

Explore Kilimanjaro's less-travelled northern side and enjoy a more peaceful trekking atmosphere.

Lemosho Trailhead to Big Tree Camp

2,000 m 2,780 m

Today your Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route adventure truly begins as you leave the foothills behind and enter the lush rainforest of Mount Kilimanjaro.

After breakfast, your Go Vision mountain team will take you toward the western side of Kilimanjaro. After completing the necessary mountain-entry procedures, you continue to the Lemosho Trailhead where the first footsteps of your climb begin.

The trail winds gradually beneath a dense canopy of ancient trees, moss-covered branches and rich mountain vegetation. Compared with the exposed landscapes that await higher on Kilimanjaro, today's forest environment feels cool, green and beautifully sheltered.

Your guides will encourage a comfortable pole pole pace from the very beginning. There is no reason to rush. The goal is to establish a steady rhythm, enjoy your surroundings and allow your body to begin adapting naturally to the climb.

As the trail rises, the dense montane rainforest gradually begins to thin. Tall trees give way to lower vegetation, heather and increasingly open mountain scenery.

The route continues over a succession of ridges while you gain altitude steadily. With every step, the landscape becomes wider and Mount Kilimanjaro begins to reveal its enormous scale.

Eventually you emerge onto the Shira Plateau, where the terrain becomes more open and expansive views replace the enclosed rainforest scenery.

You continue to Shira 1 Camp at 3,510 metres, your second mountain camp and an atmospheric place to rest after another rewarding day on Kilimanjaro.

REMOTE KILIMANJARO

Where the Northern Circuit Feels Truly Wild

Today reveals one of the defining qualities of the Northern Circuit: space. As you traverse around Kilimanjaro's northern flank, the trail enters a more remote landscape with sweeping views and a noticeably quieter mountain atmosphere.

The terrain alternates between exposed alpine desert, rocky ridges and patches of high-altitude heath. Your route steadily works around the mountain rather than rushing directly toward the summit.

This longer traverse is part of what makes the Northern Circuit such a rewarding journey. Every section reveals a different perspective of Kilimanjaro while your guides maintain a measured pole pole pace.

Eventually the trail reaches Buffalo Camp at 3,995 metres, where you settle in for another night surrounded by Kilimanjaro's vast northern wilderness.

Buffalo Camp to Third Cave Camp

Continue deeper along the Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route as today's trail carries you east across some of the mountain's quieter and more spacious northern terrain.

After breakfast at Buffalo Camp, the route moves through open heathland, broad valleys and increasingly rugged alpine scenery. The walking remains varied, with a mixture of gentle climbs and descents as you contour around Kibo.

One of today's greatest rewards is the feeling of isolation. With fewer trekking groups using this part of Kilimanjaro, you can enjoy a more peaceful rhythm and take in the immense scale of the mountain without rushing.

By afternoon, you arrive at Third Cave Camp at approximately 3,930 metres. The slightly lower sleeping altitude creates another useful stage in your gradual preparation before climbing higher toward School Huts.

Today the Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route turns toward the summit zone as you leave Third Cave Camp and climb steadily toward the vast Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo.

Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as the trail enters a cold, exposed high-altitude environment. The landscape here is wide and almost lunar, with Mawenzi rising dramatically on one side and the enormous Kibo summit massif dominating the other.

Your Go Vision mountain team keeps the pace slow and controlled. At this elevation, conserving energy, staying hydrated and maintaining a steady rhythm are more important than moving quickly.

After approximately four to five hours of trekking, you arrive at School Huts at 4,710 metres. The remainder of the afternoon is dedicated to eating, resting and preparing carefully for the summit ascent ahead.

01 How many days is the Northern Circuit Route? +

The Go Vision itinerary includes 8 trekking days on Mount Kilimanjaro. With the arrival and departure days included, the complete program is approximately 10 days.

The longer itinerary gives climbers more time to experience Kilimanjaro's changing landscapes and progress gradually toward the summit.

02 Is the Northern Circuit good for acclimatization? +

The Northern Circuit is attractive because it spends more days on the mountain than many shorter routes. This gives the itinerary more time for gradual altitude progression before summit night.

Important: Individual responses to altitude vary, so no Kilimanjaro route can guarantee successful acclimatization.
03 How difficult is the Northern Circuit? +

The Northern Circuit is a challenging high-altitude trek. Climbers should be physically prepared for several consecutive trekking days, changing weather and significant altitude.

Summit night is normally the most demanding stage because of the cold, darkness, steep ascent and thin air.

04 Is the Northern Circuit less crowded? +

One of the route's biggest attractions is its remote northern traverse. After approaching from Kilimanjaro's western side, the trail continues around quieter northern slopes before turning toward summit base.

This can create a more peaceful mountain experience during several stages of the trek.

05 What is the highest point of the climb? +

The highest point is Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres above sea level.

It is reached on summit day after leaving School Huts and climbing toward the crater rim before continuing to the summit.

06 Where does the Northern Circuit begin and finish? +

This itinerary begins from the Lemosho Trailhead on Kilimanjaro's western side.

After the summit, the route descends through the southern side of the mountain and finishes at Mweka Gate.

07 Where do climbers sleep on the route? +

The Northern Circuit is a camping route. Climbers stay in mountain tents at designated camps along the trek.

Camps on the itinerary include Big Tree, Shira 1, the Lava Tower/Moir area, Buffalo, Third Cave, School Huts and Millennium Camp.

08 What should I pack for Kilimanjaro? +

Your clothing and equipment should prepare you for very different environments, from warm rainforest to freezing summit conditions.

09 Do I need previous climbing experience? +

Technical mountaineering experience is not normally required for the standard Northern Circuit trek. However, preparation, good general fitness, determination and the ability to walk for several consecutive days are important.

Your preparation should focus on endurance, hill walking and becoming comfortable spending long hours on your feet.

10 Can I add a safari or Zanzibar after Kilimanjaro? +

Yes. Your Kilimanjaro journey can be followed by a Tanzania safari, Zanzibar beach stay or a combination of both.
